The Death of Osama bin Laden

When it was announced that Osama bin Laden had been killed, it came during a time when it was rare that I got to work with breaking news. My Sunday editor position kept me away from the daily paper, but everything aligned just right on this night: I was the 1A designer the Sunday that President Barack Obama announced that the United States had killed bin Laden. I was and am incredibly honored to have designed this page.

Bin Laden dead (May 2, 2011)

New era dawns (May 3, 2011)
After getting the news of bin Laden's death into the Democrat and Chronicle just before deadline, we were able to use the next day's newspaper to bring a full report to our readers. Local connections, the wire news and photos — everything we had, we were going to deliver to readers. In the end, we wound up having nine pages of coverage. Published here are 1A and the doubletruck.
